When Are Teeth Placed on a Dental Implant?

Table of Contents

One of the most common questions about implant treatment is when the final teeth can be fitted. There is no single answer. The timing depends on the quality of the jawbone, how stable the implant is when placed, whether extra procedures were needed and your general health. Below are the main approaches dentists use.

Osseointegration: Why Timing Matters

Before an implant can carry full chewing forces, the bone needs to grow closely around it. This process is called osseointegration and is the basis of a stable implant.

Conventional Loading

In this well-established approach, the implant is left to heal before the final teeth are fitted.

  • Waiting period: commonly a few months, often longer in the upper jaw than the lower jaw. The dentist adjusts this according to your bone.
  • Why wait: putting full chewing forces on an implant before it has integrated can cause movement and failure.
  • Temporary options: during healing, a temporary denture or other temporary tooth that does not press on the implant may be used, especially for front teeth.

Faster Loading Approaches

Under certain conditions, the waiting time before teeth are fitted can be shortened.

Immediate Loading

A temporary crown or bridge is fitted on the day of surgery or within a few days. The final teeth are fitted later, after integration.

  • Conditions:
    1. Good primary stability: the implant must be firmly held in the bone at placement, which the dentist measures during surgery.
    2. Controlled forces: the temporary teeth are designed to limit chewing forces on the implants while they heal.
  • Full-arch approaches: techniques such as All-on-4 and All-on-6, for people with no teeth in a jaw, connect several implants together, which can make temporary fixed teeth possible soon after surgery in suitable cases.

Early Loading

Teeth are fitted after a shorter healing period, typically within a few weeks to two months. This may be considered when immediate loading is not suitable but bone quality is good.

Approach When teeth are fitted Main requirement Often considered for
Conventional loading After a healing period of a few months Standard stability; suitable for most bone types Many single-tooth cases and cases with bone grafting
Early loading Within a few weeks to two months Good stability and bone quality Selected single-tooth or bridge cases
Immediate loading Same day or within a few days (temporary teeth) High primary stability Selected full-arch and front-tooth cases

Why Some People Wait Longer

  • Bone quality and quantity: the lower jaw is often denser and may heal faster; the upper jaw is often softer and may need longer.
  • Additional procedures: after a sinus lift or bone graft, the new bone needs time to mature, which can add several months.
  • General health: poorly controlled diabetes, immune conditions and smoking can slow healing.
  • Implant position: back teeth carry heavier chewing forces, so a conventional approach is often preferred there.

A Timeline That Fits You

The right timing balances comfort with the long-term stability of the implant. Your dentist will recommend an approach based on your bone, health and the area being treated, and your written plan will show the expected visits and days in Izmir.

AvrupaDent welcomes international patients at two clinics in Izmir, Buca Forbes and Gaziemir. Both hold the International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health, and each patient is supported by one English-speaking coordinator.

Getting a Written Plan

If you would like to find out whether implant treatment may be suitable for you, you can send photos of your teeth and any recent X-ray to our coordinator on WhatsApp at +90 505 691 22 01. After a dentist has reviewed them, you will receive a written plan setting out the suggested treatment, the number of visits, the days you would need to spend in Izmir and the cost. The right approach and the expected outcome depend on your individual situation and are discussed with the dentist.
